Making a Retro Style, Summer, Swing Dress!


A few months ago, my best client cut my hours in half and I lost another source of income completely. Left with just enough income to cover my bills, I had to make some major cutbacks on my expenditures, the most major one being that I had to stop buying pinup clothes altogether.

But I want pretty things! I'm a pretty creative and driven person, so I decided that, while I hunted down more clients, I would learn to sew. Now, you may have seen my earlier post about making a gathered skirt... that was the first garment I sewed. Next, I made a circle skirt with pockets. Both of those projects turned out so well that I decided to undertake a more challenging prospect: a dress. I chose some fabric from fabric.com (a Kona cotton in a color called Aqua) for $3.58 per yard. I bought 4 yards and set to work.

It didn't turn out well. Oh, the skirt turned out fine, but the rest? Oh, Lord... I fought with it every step of the way. I used wax paper to trace the seam edges of a dress I already owned, and then transferred those marks to some wrapping paper and cut them out. I pinned them to the fabric and cut them out, making sure to give a half-inch of seam allowance all around. Then, I made my first mistake: I sewed the lining pieces directly to the outer pieces, thinking that it would work out okay and hide the seams. This is not how it is done, I soon realized, as I started putting the pieces together. I ended up with weird, bunchy seams that made the bodice look lumpy. And then I made my second mistake: I held up the piece to my body and it seemed like it wouldn't reach. So, I grabbed some extra fabric and made two additional panels for the back and sewed those on. I was going along, ironing seams and trying to make it look nice, and, all the while, I am thinking: something isn't right here.

But I continued on. I had bought 9 feet of fabric for the skirt section. I had gathered that fabric, sewed it, and then attached it to the lumpy bodice. I went ahead and put in the zipper temporarily so that I could test fit, and that when I realized a whole bunch of things:

  1. I didn't need those two additional panels. With the addition of the zipper, now the whole thing was WAAAAY too loose. Those other panels weren't needed AT ALL.

  2. I needed about TWICE as much material for the skirt area; mine didn't have NEARLY enough volume and the only way that could have happened is because I didn't have enough fabric for it. So, I would need to order another 2 yards of material for that.

  3. The lining parts should be sewed to each other separately from the outer until they're all hooked together because it all looked like lumpy crap.

  4. I will have to come up with some other solution for the straps because there is NO WAY to turn a one-inch strap right side out after sewing and it is now half an inch wide. No way. Either I have to make the straps wider or find a way to "finish sew" from the outside for the same width because sewing the inside seam and then turning it is not going to happen.

  5. I need a zipper that is CONSIDERABLY shorter than the one I bought.


After that fiasco, obviously, I learned a lot. I took my whole aqua dress apart and started over, and it turned out GREAT! So, now, here, finally, is that same process as told by Pink Dress:

Before we start, here's the materials I used:
4 yards pink fabric (Kona cotton in Primrose from fabric.com - $16.75)
1 yard pink charmeuse satin (fabric.com - $4.25)
1 zipper (17 inches long - $1.78 at Ben Franklin)
1 spool of pink thread ($0.50 at Wal-Mart)

Tools needed:
Sewing machine
Iron & ironing board or a flat surface and a towel
Seam ripper
Scissors and/or cutting wheel
Straight pins (lots)
Sewing needle
Chalk
Measuring tape
Wax paper
Wrapping paper or some other large sheet paper
BBQ Skewer or knitting needle or some other long, pointy, clean object
Optional: dress form or dummy with your measurements

To start, lay the dress you want to replicate down as flat as possible on a large surface. Lay a piece of wax paper over the main bodice front, pin the wax paper as flat as possible to the dress, and, using a pen or pencil or some other pointy object, trace the seams. You should leave marks in the wax paper. Repeat this all the way around the dress until you have all the pieces. Cut the pieces out of the wax paper.

Lay the wax paper over the inside of some wrapping paper or other large paper. I like wrapping paper because it already has measurement marks printed in the inside. Pin the wax paper to the wrapping paper, lining up the edges of the wax paper cutouts as close to a grid line on the wrapping paper as you can and trace the shape onto the wrapping paper. (You could also just cut it out at this point, but I prefer to trace and then cut. Also, don't tape the wax paper to the wrapping paper; it'll tear the wrapping paper when you pull the wax paper off.)

Once you have the pieces cut out of the wrapping paper, lay them out and mark them:




You'll notice that I only have one of the "Dress Front/Side." That's because it's the same on both sides, so all I had to do was remember to flip it over to cut out the second one. Same goes for the back piece.

Next, completely unfold your outer fabric (the cotton, in my case) and measure 26 inches from the selvedge. Mark the entire length of the fabric with chalk and then cut that 26 inches off. This will be the skirt. Since the Kona cotton comes in 44" width, there's still plenty to make the bodice out of and still have some left over. Set the skirt fabric aside.

Lay your outer fabric out and then lay your lining fabric on top of it. Pin your wrapping paper to it. then cut your fabric, lining and outer, at the same time. Remember, when cutting the dress front sides and the back of the dress to only cut two out at a time and flip the paper over after the first one. Also remember to cut a little bit wider than the paper, in order ro account for seam allowance... I try to cut a quarter to a half-inch wider all around.

After you've cut out your pieces, you should have something like this:



For the straps, I just cut two strips of the cotton 21 inches long and 2.5 inches wide so I would have plenty to work with.

Now, for my next step, I use my dress form I made out of old couch cushions, masking tape, and one of my old bras stuffed with leftover fabric scraps. I made this to my measurements, and it takes into account my super long torso. I recommend making or buying a dress form when making clothes for yourself. It hurts when the pins stick you, and it is super hard to fit the pieces to you without a buddy, which I don't have.

So, next, I pin the pieces to my dress form and make little adjustment for my measurements:
 

I made these adjustments to both the lining and the outer separately, and then together, as it will be worn.

Next, it's time to sew! Start by sewing the lining pieces together:




Then sew the outer pieces together:




Note: on both the lining and the outer, that curve is SUPER TRICKY. You'll do a lot of starting and stopping, especially if you're lining with satin (because that shit's slippery), making sure everything is all lined up.

Next, iron all your pieces. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP. Ironing is boring and time consuming, but it is totally necessary! I don't know why, but it changes how your things will fit when you are finished, so iron your pieces, open the seams you made and iron them flat. I repeat: NEVER MISS AN OPPORTUNITY TO IRON!

Next, pin the lining and outer together, leaving a gap for the straps in the front at the points. You could also leave a gap in the back piece if you're sure of where you want the strap to be back there. I wasn't, so I went ahead and sewed that whole thing closed. You'll see how I dealt with that later... but I didn't want to be poked with the pins while the straps were fit (and you can't really use the dress form for that because strap fit and lay is so personal to the wearer). DO NOT SEW THE BOTTOM CLOSED. The part that attaches to the skirt should be left open because you'll have to turn this inside out later.






Now, with right sides together, sew the lining and outer, making sure to leave that space at the straps unsewn.


Turn the whole piece right-sides-out, and, using the BBQ skewer, poke the corners until everything is tight. Iron everything again, taking special care to get the seams at the edges to stretch out so that they just touch at the edges, almost exposing the seam. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP.

While we have the iron out, next, we make straps. I trimmed my rough-cut strap pieces, and then ironed them flat. Now, I tried a bunch of ways to make straps with the blue dress, but none of them worked. If you want a half-inch wide strap, you can't sew it and then turn it... it will not turn, no matter what you do. Making a finished edge is tough... this is the only way I found to do it, by trial and error. I am sure someone more experienced has a better way of doing it, but I am just beginning. This is what I did: fold one edge of the strap in and iron, then fold the other piece over and iron it flat. If I had it to do again, I would fold my "outside" edge twice and then iron before sewing, but, you know, live and learn.








Now, with the bodice turned right-side OUT, poke the straps into the holes we left open at the front.




You'll need one hands inside the bodice, between the lining and outer, to guide it in. Tuck the excess fabric at the top of the bodice in with the strap, then turn it all inside out and sew the strap in:




I used a zig-zag stitch for this part, going back and forth over it a couple of times because I don't want it coming loose. Repeat for the other side.

Now, next, I fit the zipper into the bodice. Here's why: At this point, I have to try it on to get a proper strap fit, and I do not want to be poked with the pins, so I fit the zipper and hand stitched in in temporarily to fit the straps.


You'll need someone to pin the straps to the back where you want them and to length. Have your friend pin the strap to the outside of the dress ONLY and NOT to the lining, too. Take the bodice off - carefully; you don't want to get poked by the pins. Mark the strap with chalk if there is more fabric than you need. Don't cut it yet.

Next, turn the bodice inside out again and carefully cut an opening at the seam between the lining and outer fabric, just the width of the strap.


Carefully unpin the the strap from the bodice and poke it through the hole, bringing the strap to your mark, if you made one. Sew the strap in between the lining and outer, sewing a little bit farther back and past the opening.




Iron the bodice again. Turn it inside out, make any trims you need along seams, stray threads, the long strap inside if there was any. Then, turn it right side out and iron it again. It seems silly, and I question it myself, but it makes a difference, and I don't know why.


And now, the bodice is finished! It should look something like this:







Time to turn out attention to the skirt.



Pull off a length of thread that, when doubled through the needle is five or six inches longer than your waist measurement. Maybe longer. Tie off the thread at the end.

Remember when I mentioned the selvedge on the skirt fabric we cut? I don't know if this is actually done... if you're supposed to cut it off or what... but... on the Kona cotton, anyway, there's this frayed edge and then two rows of tiny holes, which I used to make sure that the gathering on the skirt stayed even. So, thread up a needle, and start gathering the skirt fabric:


Continue gathering until you have all 4 yards of material gathered. Now, lay out your measuring tape on a long, flat surface to your waist measurement PLUS three inches. I don't know where the extra fabric goes, but you lose some in this process.

Line up your gathered skirt (not tied off yet!) to your measuring tape, and adjust the gathers until it both reaches your measurement AND the gathers are nice and even:

Bring your bodice over to your skirt piece and lay it lining side up on the skirt fabric and pin it to you the bodice. Sew the bodice and skirt together:

We're in the homestretch now!

Time for pockets, if you want them. Slip the dress on and decide where you want pockets and how big you want the opening. Mark that area with chalk, then, lay the dress flat and cut those openings with a cutting wheel or scissors:





Repeat for the other pocket.

Measure your opening, then cut four pieces of fabric the size of the opening in a "U" shape. Sew two of these together. I decided to use the satin lining fabric so that the pockets would be easier to find while I am wearing it. Then, turn the pockets right side out, and pin one side to the OUTSIDE of the skirt.
Sew that side on with the sewing machine, then, turn the dress inside out and bend the pocket edge inward and sew that seam. Repeat the whole process for the other pocket.


There is also another way to do this, but it means cutting your skirt fabric in half before it's gathered, then attaching the pockets between the edges of the panels after the skirt if gathered and attached to the skirt, but that also means that you've got to cut the skirt in the back to accommodate the zipper... it's a trade-off. Pockets are just tough. I don't like doing it.


The finished pockets should look like this:

Next, sew the zipper in to the skirt:

And finish by sewing from the hem to the zipper.

Finally, the last step: turn the dress inside out and iron the skirt and iron a hemline. You can adjust the hem at this point, to whatever length suits you. I am tall, so I just turned mine 3/4ths of an inch:


Lastly, sew the hem:

And that's it! I went through the inside of the dress and trimmed threads and such after this, but it turned out SUPER nice. I am pretty impressed with myself. I have plans for dresses in three more styles, as well as another dress like this in a pretty, pale yellow.

I Made A Skirt!

I've never been great at sewing. Probably because I've never really sat down and tried to learn. Over the years, I've sewn simple things - curtains, pillows, a Nook cover, a stuffed animal here and there - and I've done alterations on existing clothing, getting them to fit me right, but make something from scratch? Nope.

But I did it!








I've always admired Pinup Girl Clothing's "Just Desserts" dress in pink, yellow, and black, but I've never been able to locate one in my size. Being the impatient person I am, I decided to make a replica skirt, but put my own twist on it.

So, earlier this month, I ordered a bunch of fabric from Fabric.com: 5 yards of black cotton, 4 yards of blue cotton (because I have plans for something else), three yards of pink cotton, and a yard of yellow cotton. The fabric got here a couple weeks ago, and I have been planning this project ever since. If you look at the Pinup Girl Clothing dress, you'll notice that the stripes alternate pink, yellow, black, all the way around. On mine, I decided to alternate them pink, black, yellow, black, instead. Then, I also decided that I wanted a gathered skirt, so I sat down and did some math and figured out what I wanted.




I first cut the panels out, accommodating for a generous seam allowance, since I am a beginner seamstress. I made the top of the panels 6 inches wide, and widened it out to 13 inches wide at the bottom. I made 16 panels: 8 black ones, 4 pink, and 4 yellow.











Yes, I do just sit around the house wearing these fancy dresses.
Next, I pinned them together in the right order, and then cut the waistband, cutting it 4 inches longer than necessary, you know, just in case.

Then, I sewed all the seams together on my machine, making one large piece of fabric. Then, I gathered the top, pinned it to the waistband, and sewed that together.











Next, I hemmed the skirt, going one panel at a time. I hemmed all the black panels first, then switched thread colors to pink, and hemmed all the pink panels, then switched again to yellow thread before hemming the yellow panels. I think this gave it a real finished look.











The final step was inserting the zipper. I measured and pinned where the zipper would be, then sewed the back seam of the skirt together up to where the zipper bottom would be. Next, because I am 'fraidy cat and didn't want to chance the zipper getting off somehow while I sewed, I hand stitched the zipper into place, then went over the stitches on the machine, both reinforcing the zipper seam and making it look more finished... AND I changed thread colors before sewing to the pink panel in the back so that the stitches on zipper seam can't be seen, either!





And that's it! I am thinking of adding a detachable ribbon to the back, but we'll see. My next project will be a similar skirt, but in black and the aqua blue fabric I bought. After that, I have plans for a wiggle dress using satin with a harlequin print and a back detail piece that I can't wait to share with y'all!

Pin Curl Setting Lotion Reviews

In this post, I'll be comparing four setting lotions I have used, how they worked on my hair (long, fine, lots of it), their holding power, scents, ease of use, and more.

As I have mentioned in a previous post, I have a LOT of very fine, long, straight hair that resists being curly the way a toddler resists liver and onions. I have to force it to have any curl whatsoever, and, even if I do, I literally get one day out a roller set. Curling irons don't work on my hair. I recently discovered setting lotions, remembering that my Grandma and Great-Grandma used setting lotions back when I was a kid - they used Nestle Superset Wave Setting Lotion, which smelled like a combo of Mentholatum and floral perfume - that they would dip combs into and then through their hair, roll onto sponge or plastic rollers and into pincurls, and let dry overnight. Being that I was 4, I don't remember how long their curls lasted.

Anyway, I have been on the hunt for a setting lotion that works for me. In this review, I will discuss four types that I have tried so far: Lottabody Texturizing Setting LotionLottabody Setting Lotion Concentrate, Jane Carter Wrap & Roll, and Suavacita Grooming Spray, which says on the bottle can be used as a setting lotion.

Below, I have rated the products for Ease of Use, Scent, Drying Time, Curl Production, Hold, and Length of Set.

I should note here that no person or entity is paying me for these reviews. I am just your average user who is looking for a product that works and I am sharing my experience with y'all. The following reviews reflect my experience with these products.

As you can see, my hair is straight as a board. It lays flat on my head, has ZERO curl or wave.

Here's a Control Set, done with nothing but water:


A plain water set might last me a few hours, if I am lucky. Honestly, pincurling my hair while it is damp from a shower or swimming is pretty much a waste of time. After a few hours, my hair has a slight wave to it, the ends are probably frizzy as all hell. Not cool. Here's a pic:




Okay. so, now, on to the setting lotions.

Comments: Probably my favorite one. I use this by spraying my combed out hair before I start, and then again at the end before I put on a scarf for the night. Smells like a tropical drink, which is nice, lots of coconut scent, which lasts a long time. I've used this setting lotion with pin curls, magnetic rollers, and sponge rollers, and the curls all turn out about the same: lots of spirals, not crunchy, light and bouncy. At the end of the day, my hair will still look the same as when I styled it after taking the set out, which is what I want. Even after sleeping on the curls, the next day, I'll pretty much have the same look. I can usually get three good days out of a wet or dry set using this setting lotion. Drying time on a wet set is the biggest downside - as it is with all the setting lotions I have tried - but this one dries the fastest on a dry set and holds the longest. To use, I pour it from the bottle into a spray bottle and spray at the beginning and end of a set; that's it.
BOTTOM LINE: If you've got long, fine hair like I do, this is the product to choose. Smells great, works well, and, most of all, the curls last a long time. Even with having to find a sprayer to put it on my hair, still my choice.


Lotta Body Setting Lotion (Concentrate)

Length of Set: 3/5 Curls

Comments: Related to the setting lotion above, this version must be mixed prior to use, and I think the addition of water adds troubles to the whole process. To use, I fill the spray bottle partially with the setting lotion and then fill the rest of the way with water, using the mixing instructions off the bottle. After mixing, I use the same process to apply: through hair at the beginning and spray over curls at the end. Curls on wet set with this product tend to be a little flat. Also, the drying time is just unbelievable. I have left a wet set with this product in for 22 hours and it was still wet at the back of my head while I was unrolling it, which meant that my hair - instead of being sweetly curled - was just frizzy with a little wave here and there. On a dry set, it isn't a bad product and works like it's supposed to; however, sometimes, the curls are a little on the crunchy side - occasionally, glued together - which makes the brush out very difficult. Why 2 out of 5 Curls on Scent? I dunno. It doesn't smell like anything.
BOTTOM LINE: Works pretty well on fine hair; inexpensive option.

Jane Carter Wrap & Roll

Comments: I had high hopes for this one, as it was recommended to me by a lady whose hair looked freaking amazeballs and whose set lasted a full week. I wanted that, so I got some. So, it's a mousse, you spritz some in your hand and spread it through your combed hair, then curl as usual with sponge rollers and pin curls. It smells like floral shampoo, neither overtly pleasant nor unpleasant. My hair dried pretty quickly with only slight dampness at the back of my head after sleeping with the set in my hair, about 10 hours. The resultant curls were very "spring-y" and coiled and very soft. However, the curls tended to come out as soon as I started brushing my hair to style it, and, by the end of the day, my hair was just wavy; hardly any curl at all. By the next day, the curls were gone completely and I had to do an up-do. That night, I re-curled my hair with the mousse doing a dry set, and it was pretty much the same story: gorgeous curls that lasted a few hours, only a little bit better than a plain water set. Also, I have noticed that the product made the ends of my hair really dry and it's breaking some at the ends, which hasn't happened in a long time.
BOTTOM LINE: I don't think that I will use this product again; I just don't think it works well on fine hair. It's probably a product that works best on thicker hair, or some type other than mine because it really doesn't work for me.

Suavacita Grooming Spray
Ease of Use: 5/5 Curls
Scent: 5/5 Curls
Drying Time: 4/5 Curls
Curl Production: 2/5
Hold: 2/5
Length of Set: 2/5
Comments: This comes in a handy pump sprayer that produces a fine mist, so I don't have to mix anything or use my hands to get it in my hair, which is a major win, in my book. Also, it smells like sweet watermelon, which is also a major win. It dries quickly in wet or dry hair, but the resultant curls - using this as a setting lotion - are a bit lackluster and didn't last. However, this product's strength isn't in its curling prowess: it's in smoothing hair as you style it! Right before I spray with hairspray to set my style, I spray some of this on my hair and use my smoothing and teasing brush to get a really smooth hair style on top. Big win. Using it as a curling agent, I didn't get curly, long-lasting hold out of this product, but it works great in other applications, so I will definitely be buying more.
BOTTOM LINE: A better grooming spray than a setting lotion, but well worth the money for vintage hair styles; makes for a beautiful, smooth finish on fine hair.

Jenny, Jenny, who can I turn to?

With sincerest apologies to Tommy Tutone, I gotta say that I LOVE the new red Jenny dress from Pinup Girl Clothing. I managed to snag one in the recent April Fool's Day sale on their web site, buying my normal 2X size. After ordering, others were receiving theirs and were unhappy with the sizing, letting other buyers know that the waists seem to run small for this colorway. I was a teeny bit concerned, but only a little, bitty bit because I usually have to take my Jenny dresses in at the waist in order for them to fit me right. My measurements at the moment are 48-36-47.

After a delay in processing my order, and a delay in shipping my order, I finally received my sale purchases this afternoon. I immediately tried on the new Jenny, a little scared that it wouldn't fit or would be uncomfortable.

I needn't have worried: this Jenny dress fits me perfectly right out of the bag; no waist alterations will be necessary. Unlike most of my 2X Jenny dresses, the waist on this one also almost comes down to my bellybutton, which is not something I am used to; I usually have to size up to 3X or 4X and then alter down to fit me for that to happen, considering my freakishly long waist (12 inches from underbust to natural waist). The bust sits and lays right, and, while snug, the waist fits perfectly, nipping in at just the right spot.

AND POCKETS, YOU GUYS!!!!

Holy crap. I totally forgot that this dress came with POCKETS when I was trying it on, but I just happened to fiddle around over there and noticed that, yup, there's POCKETS! Big, nice, deep ones, too!

In sum, if your measurements are near the top end of your size on the size chart, I'd size up on this dress, but, if you're like me and fall sort of in between on the lower end (for me, between XL & 2X, depending), your normal size should be fine.

A Princess & Her Chariot

When I was very young, my father had 1957 Chevy Bel-Airs. I remember when I was about 3 or 4, watching him battle an invisible army of mosquitoes as he set the body on the frame (by himself, mind) on the car that I would grow up in, doing donuts, taking long drives on dirt roads, working on until it got too dark to see. I grew up with dirty fingernails, greasy hands, and busted knuckles, helping my Dad and his friends work on their cars.

As the years went on, Dad got more and more economical (and practical) cars for his job and the commute, but I've always had a giant car with tons of chrome. The first car I bought for myself with my own money was a 1970 Chevelle Malibu. It had a stroked 383 with a 750 CFM Holley, turbo 350 transmission with shift kit and stall converter, weight reduction, roll cage, NOS setup, slap shifter... the works. I bought it for $1,700 from a guy who'd built into a drag car. This thing was wicked fast.  You had to be going 55 MPH to shift it from first to second. The only way to drive it sanely on the street was to turn down the transmission's vacuum advance so it would shift gears and lower speeds. Otherwise, you put it in "Drive," and the car would sit there and shake while you pushed the gas pedal until it hit a certain RPM and then you'd take off like a rocket.

I spent one whole summer drag racing it on back roads. One day, I got a bug in my bonnet to see just how fast the car really was. So, I took it an hour and half to the closest drag strip to find out. When
 I got there, the tech guys weren't going to let me race. Then this one guy - who'd stood off to the sidelines and not said much until then - said, "Let her do a time."

I was so excited! I lined up, slapped it into drive and pushed the gas. The car sat there and shook while I waited for the green light. It popped green and - all the stars in the sky must've lined up all at once that afternoon - I punched the gas to the floor. The front wheels came up off the ground, and all I can see out the windshield is sky...sky... sky... GROUND. And in a few heartbeats, it was over with my heart going BOOM, BOOM, BOOM down at the end of the strip.

All these guys came running over and made me pull to the side and started yelling at me: "You can't drive that here! You need a harness and a helmet and a license..." And the one guy who'd let me race, he said to another guy standing there, "I told you so."

All I could think to ask was, "How fast was I?"

The guy who let me have a go said, "You did it in 9.29. That's too fast to race here without a special license and safety equipment." He handed me my slip. It was there in black and white: 9.29 at 147 MPH. The most exciting thing I have ever done was finished in under 10 seconds. "You're not driving this back home, are you?" he asked.

"Well, I drove it here," I said. And I got under the car and turned the vacuum advance down and drove back home, content in the knowledge that I had a Seriously Hot Car.

Over the years, I have owned several cars - none as hot as my Chevelle - and they all have one thing in common: big, loud motors. I am a firm believer in big pipes and big blocks. For my birthday a few years back, I bought myself a 1971 Ford LTD Brougham with a factory 429, triple black. I love this car. It will never be a race car, but it is a TON of fun to drive. I haven't gotten to drive it much the last couple of years because we're fixing it up, repairing rust and getting ready to put on a custom paint job. I'll update as the job continues. The Damage Done...

I've mentioned in the past just how hard it's been for me to recuperate from the years of emotional and verbal abuse I endured at the hands of my ex husband. He was vile to me starting about 18 months into our marriage and just got worse over the next 15 years. By the time he dumped me for another woman, I had zero confidence and believed what he told me (and what other members of my family told me, too): that I was fat, ugly, and cheap; a shallow-thinker with little potential; lacking enough talent or drive to do anything worthwhile or notable; lacking motivation to earn more money. I could address this litany of bullshit bulletpoint by bulletpoint, but I won't; instead, I am going to tell you a story.

My new husband, Tommy Lee, recently got a really great job in his shop, and gave me some money to buy whatever I wanted, hinting heavily that I should buy a couple of dresses that he'd had his eye on me wearing. There was a sale at the site, so I bought them. They arrived here on Wednesday, and I tried them on after work and took photos, sharing them with my Instagram and Facebook followers. One in particular got a lot of attention, this one:

You may or may not be able to tell from the picture that I am not wearing any undergarments in this photo; not even a bra. But the dress made me feel pretty, so I shared moment.

Well, one snarky anonymous commenter wrote:
"You look like a Cabbage Patch doll dressed in Barbie clothes."

Now, this anonymous commenter apparently - based on the Instagram feed associated with the account that commented - has a beef with Pinup Girl Clothing. I am not qualified to comment on whether her claims have validity, but I would guess not, considering that it was this person and not PUGC who made such a low, ill-conceived, cowardly comment. I can't speak for other survivors of emotional and mental abuse, but I know how I felt about it, and this cowardly, anonymous commenter ought to feel ashamed of herself. Comments such as these make abuse survivors who lack confidence shrink further back into their shells. It damages people, makes self-doubt worse, and can even lead to depression, thoughts of self-harm and suicide, and more.

I share this story not to garner your sympathy. I'm fine. Sure, the unnecessary comment stung (still does), but I know that this person thinks - for some reason - that I have something to do with PUG; I don't. And she doesn't know me. I am just a customer of theirs who lives far, far away from Los Angeles, out in the boonies, someone who finally found herself and started to heal from years of abuse thanks to pinup culture and the clothes. And though this person may have a problem with the owners and managers of PUGC, taking to shaming their customers - something this person claims PUG does in private - makes the whole thing look like sour grapes, invalidates her arguments against PUG, and makes her look like a petulant, childish twit.

She doesn't know the circumstances of this photo being taken. She doesn't know that I don't show my arms most of the time because I am ashamed of them. She doesn't know that I endure hundreds of abusive, filthy, and rude comments and side-long glances from disapproving and jealous people every day in regards to my breasts. She doesn't know that I put on some weight after quitting smoking and I often look in the mirror and hate myself. She doesn't know that her comments made me think about quitting just about everything that puts me out in public. Those impulses - to give up things you love and hide and surrender to the feelings of worthlessness - are residual effects of the abuse I suffered. I struggle every single day to feel good about myself, to love myself, to be kind to my body for what it is. She doesn't know the damage her words can do - and did do - and probably wouldn't care, even if she did.

If I could give rude commenters some advice, it would be this gem that I learned when I was little, from Bambi: "If you can say something nice, don't say anything at all."

Keep your snarky comments to yourself, regardless of your "motivation" behind them.

I mean, really: is your snarky insult really worth wondering if YOU were the reason someone took his or her life?

Spring Hair Flowers

As I have mentioned before, I make hair flowers to go with outfits. I make them just because I can, and I find it therapeutic and relaxing, I'd imagine in much the same way fishing fly-tiers find the steady wrapping motion relaxing; it's very much the same except, you know, flowers 'n'at.

Anyway, I am taking custom orders right now, so please contact me (through this blog, through my Etsy store - link over there on the right sidebar, through Facebook, etc) and let me know what colors/flowers/style you want and I will do my best to accommodate. Right now, I have on hand:
