Fried Cheese Balls!

One of my favorite things to do is make up new recipes from random items I find in the store when I go shopping... and it's one of the reasons that I LOVE WinCo Foods so much... because there is always new and interesting ingredients there that I can't get anywhere else for the same price. So, even though I am an hour away from the closest one, it's totally worth the drive for me. But I digress.

This past week, I discovered Ciliegine Fresh Mozzarella cheese balls in the dairy case, and I thought, what could I make out of those? And then it hit me: Fried Cheese Balls!

Now, I have watched enough Food Network to know that you have to freeze your food before you deep fry it if you expect your breading to stay on, so I froze the cheese balls, then breaded them, then froze them again, and then cooked them up. You can watch me make them here:

Been a Busy Month - Time For a Cocktail!

I have had a really busy September so far. Every single weekend, I have had events to attend (which are AWESOME!) or things to do to prepare for winter in the northern hemisphere, and just a lot of extra work and projects all coming together. And that means... IT'S COCKTAIL TIME, BABY!

I really love using frozen fruit in my blended drinks because it means that there is no water to dilute my drinks. (Hey, if you're gonna drink, may as well get it done, am I right?) This drink uses frozen pineapple and raspberries with three different types of liquor to create the perfect wind-down drink for after work or Tiki Tuesday! If you like your drinks a little thicker, put it in the freezer (using a plastic glass!!!) for 30 minutes or so. The alcohol content won't let it freeze all the way!

Soft Pretzels in the Mid-Century Kitchen with Molly Starlite!

This past weekend, I got the opportunity to go to the fair with my car club, the Miss Shifters All Girls Car Club, and show our cars! It had been YEARS since I went to the fair, so I had a blast seeing the exhibitions, performances, rides, games, and the fair food that we don't normally get to eat around here.

I thought it would be fun this week to make some fair food at home, so in this week's episode of the Mid-Century Kitchen with Molly Starlite, I made soft pretzel rolls at home! This was one of my most popular recipes with the guys here at the house; both of them ate three as soon as I was done shooting the video!

It's a little bit involved to make dough from scratch and turn it into pretzels, but it is so worth it! Watch me make it here:

My Busy Weekend!

This past weekend, I had several events to go to, and, living way out here in the boonies, it means being pretty organized and planning to leave way earlier than you think you need to. That was what we tried to do this past weekend.

Saturday was The Retro Studio's 2nd annual pinup contest and car show. I had pre-paid my entry fee for the car show and planned to bring my Shillelagh, but the car was not running right. The night before - Friday - we thought we had the problems all worked out... we found where someone had broken two spark plug wires off at the block on the driver's side (probably at a car show when we had the hood open), but when we went to leave Saturday morning, the car was running like total crap again.

I'd already had a bad morning. My necklace broke, my wet set wasn't totally dry, and the dress I bought for the event didn't fit right. To have my car not running right was just the icing on the cake, and I was starting to wonder if someone had a voodoo doll of me and was sticking pins in it!

We brought the Shillelagh back home and took my Explorer to the event instead, planning to go ahead with the pinup contest. The people there were so nice, and we had a total blast looking at the cool cars at the car show and I even got the DJ, Clay, to play my new CD! I sold a whole bunch of CDs, too, and was just so happy to meet so many awesome people and watch them listening to my CD that I wasn't prepared at all for the announcement at the pinup contest that I had WON!

I totally didn't expect to win, so I was just stunned when Jeni called my name... and I was already a little emotional hearing my music on the loudspeaker, so I totally cried when I realized that I won. It was a super special moment!

Later that night, we worked on the Shillelagh some more, finally deducing (after taking the carburetor off and all apart 4 times) that the problem was not the carb at all, but a timing problem, and it turned out to be the vacuum advance on the distributor that was literally knocking the motor out of time at mid-range.

After fixing that, we were all ready to go to the Retro Studio's Sock Hop in Athol! We changed clothes and went to the dance... which is something I have never gotten to do before. I wore the Pinup Girl Clothing Bernadette dress in pink  - which reminds me a LOT of the dress Lorraine Baines wore to the Enchantment Under The Sea Dance in Back to the Future - and my Tommy Lee and I went dancing! The music was great, and there was swing dancing lessons with Vintage Swing Spokane, delicious cupcakes and punch... I had a blast. Tommy Lee bought a bunch of raffle tickets and won a few things... it was well worth the drive to go out!

The next morning, we had to get up early again and we took the newly-repaired Shillelagh into Spokane to the Spokane Interstate Fair at the fairgrounds for an all-day car show with the Miss Shifters! The kids had a blast riding all the rides, and we saw a ballet performance, a hypnotist, and got to try all kinds of bad-for-you carnival foods! There was a camel and a sea lion, and so many neat thins to see. We had an awesome time hanging out with friends and family.



All in all, I had so much fun this weekend, and a lot of good came out of it... I got to meet a whole bunch of super awesome people... I got to hang out with friends and family... a lot of people got to hear my music... I sold out my CDs and had to order more this morning... my car is finally running right... and my busy month isn't over yet... I have a photo shoot with my car later this week and, this weekend, I am playing in a showcase at MickDuff's Beer Hall in Sandpoint at 5PM Saturday. Hope I can see you there! (I should have more CDs by then, too!)

1958 Tollhouse Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe!

It's after Labor Day, and that means two things:
1) no more white clothing (yeah, whatever... I'm a rebel); &
2) Back to school time!

Was there anything more comforting than getting off the bus & finding a plate of cookies waiting for you when you got home from school? This recipe - which I found in a 1958 Better Homes & Gardens magazine - is a Nestle Tollhouse cookie recipe... and the main differences I found between this recipe and the one that is currently listed on the back of most Tollhouse chip packages is that there is a LOT less sugar. In the modern recipe, it calls for 3/4ths cup white sugar AND 3/4ths cup brown sugar! That's quite a bit!

This retro recipe calls for just 6 tablespoons each, which, while still a bunch, is nowhere near 3/4ths of a cup!

These cookies turned out soft but still crunchy - if that's possible! - and not nearly as sweet as more modern chocolate chip cookie recipes. Watch me make them here:
